California Gov. Gavin Newsom is headed to Texas this weekend to rally Democrats following what he’s calling a “redistricting victory” in his own state this week.

According to Politico, Newsom will headline a Saturday rally alongside Texas Democrat lawmakers after California voters approved Proposition 50, a ballot measure that gives Democrats new tools to redraw congressional lines in their favor.

Newsom, who is rumored to be eyeing a 2028 presidential run, also transferred $3 million from his campaign fund to a national Democrat super PAC to finance similar efforts in other states.

The trip comes after Texas’ own redistricting fight earlier this year, when Republicans in the legislature approved a new congressional map reinforcing their majority. Democrats blasted that map as unfair, but the new boundaries have thus far survived legal challenges. Now, California Democrats are openly boasting of using their state’s process to claw back seats lost to Republicans.

“California stepped up. Now, we are taking this fight across the country—helping Democrats in other states push back against Trump’s election rigging,” Newsom said in a statement to Politico.

While Newsom frames his California campaign as “protecting democracy,” Proposition 50’s passage effectively greenlights an overtly partisan redraw benefiting Democrats—the same practice he and his allies have long accused Republicans of engaging in.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, meanwhile, is slated to hold a “special announcement” in Houston on Sunday, where he is expected to make his re-election bid official.
