Andrew White, the son of former Gov. Mark White, announced he is ending his campaign for the Democrat nomination for governor, citing fundraising struggles.
White, who previously ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2018, said he is stepping aside with State Rep. Gina Hinojosa emerging as the frontrunner in the Democrat primary.
In a video message to supporters, White said the campaign had failed to raise the resources needed to remain competitive.
“The fact of the matter is, is that politics involves not just voting your ballot, but you’re also voting your dollars. And we just haven’t raised the money that we needed to raise to be successful,” White said. “So instead of fighting this fight against Gina, I think it’s better for me to step aside and that Gina save her resources so that she can beat Greg Abbott in November, because that’s what’s important.”
White said he plans to endorse and support Hinojosa’s campaign.
Reflecting on the effort, White said the campaign covered roughly 12,000 miles over three months before concluding it was time to move on.
The Democrat nominee will face Gov. Greg Abbott, the likely Republican nominee. Abbott enters the election with a campaign war chest approaching $90 million and is seeking an unprecedented fourth term.
