A former San Antonio teacher is facing a dozen felony charges for possessing child sexual abuse material.

Carl Alan Atnip, 48, was arrested and charged with 12 counts of possession of child pornography, the term used in Texas law for child sexual abuse material.

The charges are third-degree felonies that date back to 2023.

Atnip was a special education teacher at Highlands High School in the San Antonio Independent School District from October 2021 to August 2023, a report by the San Antonio Express-News confirmed.

A Bexar County grand jury indicted Atnip in August 2026.

Atnip was picked up October 28 during a traffic stop when an officer discovered the outstanding warrant for his arrest, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

He was booked into the Bexar County Jail. Bond was set at $50,000.

Atnip has held a special education teaching certificate since 2011. His certification is currently under review by the Texas Education Agency.

In just the past few years, hundreds of Texas educators have been accused of sex crimes involving students and other children, including possessing, producing, and distributing child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

The TEA is currently investigating thousands of educator sexual misconduct complaints.
