While many voters focus on legislative and executive races, the judiciary — particularly the Supreme Court of Texas — wields profound influence over the state’s economy and the lives of all Texans. For that reason, Texas’ largest taxpayer group today endorsed Michael Massengale’s candidacy to the Supreme Court.
“Justice Michael Massengale has developed an outstanding judicial record on the First Court of Appeals, honoring the rule of law and never legislating from the bench,” said Michael Quinn Sullivan, who leads Texans for Fiscal Responsibility, a premier project of Empower Texans. “Justice Massengale will bring a strong work ethic to the bench and is committed to ensuring that Texas’ judicial system serves the people and not itself.”
Massengale is challenging Justice Debra Lehrmann for the Place 3 seat on the Supreme Court of Texas in the Republican Primary.
Justice Michael Massengale was appointed to the First Court of Appeals by Governor Rick Perry six years ago, in the summer of 2009. He was elected in 2010 and re-elected to a full term in 2012. Before taking the bench, he was a partner at Baker Botts L.L.P. where he specialized in commercial litigation.
He is a former Harris County Republican Party precinct chairman, and he served for four years as president of the Houston Lawyers Chapter of the Federalist Society, the nation’s preeminent association of conservative lawyers. He graduated with honors from The University of Texas School of Law. After law school, he clerked for United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and an Eagle Scout.
“Michael Massengale is a proven and resolute strict-constructionist who has worked diligently to advance individual liberty, promote personal responsibility, and protect property rights,” said Sullivan. “All Texans who prize liberty and a conservative judiciary should support Justice Michael Massengale for the Texas Supreme Court.”
