Despite running for office claiming to be a conservative, State Rep. Cindy Burkett (R–Sunnyvale) has quickly taken a turn to the left. During the most recent legislative session, Burkett scored in the bottom third of Republican House members, earning a 61 on the Fiscal Responsibility Index.

Her departure from conservative principles was so pronounced that Rice University researcher Mark Jones singled-out Burkett as one of two Republican legislators whose “ideological position within the GOP caucus shifted the most.”

Burkett earned her low score on the Index by supporting legislation aimed at the free speech of conservative citizens that Governor Greg Abbott said violated the First Amendment. She also supported a Democrat-backed bill designed to undermine property tax rollback rate protections and a bill giving additional welfare benefits to felons.

Fortunately, conservative voters in House District 113 have a choice.

Burkett is being challenged in the Republican primary by conservative businessman Jonathan Boos. A Dallas native, Boos was a practicing attorney until he started a small business with his brother. Boos now employs 15 people.

Jonathan Boos has previously served as President of the Dallas County Young Republicans and on the State Republican Executive Committee.
