Proving that every vote matters, voters in the United Kingdom voted to exit the failed experiment of the European Union. This vote for British self-governance deals a blow to the bloated Brussels bureaucracy that has failed to reform despite years of growing frustration.
The EU was long a dream of leftists who sought to erase national borders. Brits, however, were frustrated at losing control over their immigration policies while shouldering the burden of the EU’s cash-strapped weaker member states. (Only Germany contributes more money to the EU budget.)
The UK’s political establishment (and some of their lefty celebrities) wanted to stay in the EU. Barack Obama wanted the UK to remain, as did liberals around the globe.
Yet the British voters chose self-governance over political convenience.
Approximately 52 percent of voters chose to “Leave” the EU. Technically, the referendum is legally non-binding but it is unlikely the David Cameron’s government will ignore the results.
No one knows how the other EU countries will react, there are no “rules” for a nation to leave the union. One can only imagine Brussels won’t be pleased to see their second-largest cash cow walk out of the barn.
So close to our own Independence Day, Americans should stand strongly beside our cousins across the pond as they chart independence from the EU.
