On Tuesday, Austinites can attend a forum on the design of a new $1.25 million BMX/skate park that was approved by voters as part of a larger bond in 2006. Meanwhile, the town of Tomball is considering spending $4 to $12 million in taxpayer funds on a sports arena, which would have many features provided by private gyms like Liftetime Fitness at no cost to taxpayers.

Tomball, which is northwest of Houston, announced this week it is studying the economic impact of the proposed sports facility. As for the Austin confab, Kyle Dion of New Line Skate Parks will present a conceptual design for the park at 7:30 p.m. this Tuesday at the Austin Recreation Center Gymnasium at 1301 Shoal Creek Blvd.

As we have seen with levies breaking in New Orleans and bridges falling down in Minneapolis, government has a tough time getting the essentials right, so why is government getting in the recreation business?
