Conservative stalwart Van Taylor is headed to Washington, D.C.
Collin County voters chose the Republican state senator from Plano to represent Texas’ 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives by a 10-point margin over his Democrat opponent Lorie Burch. Taylor will fill the open seat vacated by retiring 14-term U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson.
“In 1968, a Republican took this seat, and it’s going to be Republican for the future,” Taylor told the crowd at a victory celebration for Collin County Republicans Tuesday night. “We won big tonight for the 3rd District.”
“That victory is not mine,” said Taylor, acknowledging his supporters. “That victory is yours.”
Taylor is one of the most consistently conservative members of the Texas Legislature, earning an A+ career rating on the Fiscal Responsibility Index. He’s assured constituents he will “continue to fight for less government and more freedom” while serving in Congress.
The Marine Corps veteran of the Iraq War was first elected to the Texas House in 2010 and re-elected in 2012. In 2014, Taylor ran for and won the Texas Senate District 8 seat he now holds.
State Senator-elect Angela Paxton will fill that seat when Taylor goes to Washington in January.
Taylor said his family, who surrounded him onstage Tuesday night, is his inspiration to serve. “I want to give you and all the children of this great land an America that is just as free, just as strong, and just as filled with opportunity as the one that was handed to our forefathers.”
“We dream of an America with prosperity, with freedom, where government is limited and potential is unlimited,” Taylor added. That’s a winning vision in Collin County, one that constituents want Taylor to spread in Washington.
