Last week, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner became chairman of Climate Mayors of America, a leftist climate change organization that seeks to cripple the oil and gas industry.
The Democrat mayor replaces outgoing chairman and Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh, whom President Joe Biden nominated to serve as Secretary of Labor. In a recent press release, Climate Mayors of America stated Turner would “help catalyze climate-forward actions taken at the local level, provide an example of climate action for leaders at all levels of government, and advocate for an economic recovery grounded in equity and environmental stewardship.”
This comes despite Houston being dubbed the “energy capital of the nation.”
After becoming chairman, Turner claimed, “Cities are powerful drivers in the race against climate change. Mayors are investing in clean energy, greening our economies, and creating more sustainable and resilient communities across the U.S.”
“With a new administration in the White House, Climate Mayors are prepared to lead swift, bold action on climate that will help our nation recover and build for a better future,” he added.
Turner has a history of backing climate change proposals. After Hurricane Harvey, he launched Resilient Houston and the Houston Climate Action Plan, which involves the use of government funds to transition away from fossil fuels, committing to only purchase 100 percent renewable energy.
According to the Greater Houston Partnership, Houston employs nearly a third of the nation’s jobs in oil and gas extraction.
