Thus far, four candidates have declared their candidacy for Texas House District 122, currently represented by liberal Republican State Rep. Lyle Larson (San Antonio).

Larson recently announced he would not be seeking re-election.

The candidates vying for the Republican nomination include former Bexar County GOP chairman and current State Republican Executive Committeeman Mark Dorazio, former San Antonio City Councilwoman Elisa Chan, San Antonio businessman Adam Blanchard, and former Bexar County District Attorney Nico LaHood.

Currently, Texas House District 122 encompasses the northwest portion of Bexar County. The proposed boundaries as a part of the decennial redistricting process making its way through the Texas Legislature extend the district even further northwest, into more suburban areas of the county.

Notably, former Hollywood Park Mayor and City Councilman Chris Fails, who was also a Republican primary challenger to Larson in 2018, indicated on Twitter that he has no intention of running again but supports Dorazio’s candidacy. Fails was endorsed by Gov. Greg Abbott in his 2018 primary race against Larson.

Within minutes of Blanchard’s announcement, Texans for Lawsuit Reform announced their endorsement of his candidacy, leading many to believe it was an attempt to discourage other candidates from entering the race, as the organization has historically given significant amounts of money to candidates they endorse.

Both the candidate filing period and primary election date are in a state of flux at the moment, wholly dependent on when the state Legislature gives final approval of redistricting maps and when any almost-inevitable litigation is settled.
