As President Joe Biden’s open border crisis continues with rising numbers of illegal border crossers and enough fentanyl to kill every Texan roughly 150 times over, Uncensored: The Border Education Summit took place at the Texas Capitol in Austin on Wednesday.
Around 100 citizens gathered in the Capitol auditorium to listen to experts on border policy and the ongoing crisis.
Speakers included Senior Fellow at the Center for Renewing America Ken Cuccinelli, who has promoted the plan for states to declare an invasion and defend their sovereign borders—as 18 Texas counties have done—as well as U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX).
Roy has been particularly focused on the issue of drug trafficking, with his office working to have criminal cartels declared Foreign Terrorist Organizations and easing law enforcement’s ability to work against the transnational criminal organizations.
Two former U.S. officials—former Border Patrol chief and current Texas Public Policy Foundation fellow Rodney Scott, as well as former U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan—also spoke at the summit.
Morgan highlighted the most pertinent fact of the day: “Border security is national security.”
Additionally, Texas border county officials such as Kinney County Sheriff Brad Coe, Kinney County Attorney Brent Smith, and Goliad County Sheriff Roy Boyd shared their experiences with the crisis from the frontline. From migrants to cartels to deaths, they confirmed that there is nothing humanitarian about Biden’s open border policy.
Additional law enforcement officials, as well as activists, spoke on topics such as child trafficking and catch and release policies.
Notably, few state officials attended.
Brent Smith told Texas Scorecard previously that “their absence will speak volumes,” especially as “the safety and security of its citizens is the paramount goal for any government.”
State Sen. Bob Hall (R–Edgewood) and State Reps. Brian Harrison (R–Waxahachie), Bryan Slaton (R–Royse City), and Matt Schaefer (R–Tyler) were all in attendance.
