A teacher at Conroe ISD is under fire for threatening language used during a recent school board meeting.
The main topic of discussion was a comment made by school board member Melissa Dungan about a poster she says displayed the tenets of DEI, or diversity, equity, and inclusion.
After national liberal publications blasted Dungan for criticizing the poster, Theresa Neman—an English teacher at Oak Ridge High School—showed up to the next school board meeting to support it.
“If I am not professional enough to choose my posters and I am not professional enough to choose my books, please do not make me professional enough to choose who lives and who dies. If I can’t choose posters and I can’t choose books, then don’t make me choose bullets,” said Neman.
While Conroe ISD did not respond to Texas Scorecard’s request for a comment, Neman is still listed as a teacher on the school’s website.
State Rep. Steve Toth (R–The Woodlands) told Texas Scorecard the outburst reflected poorly on the district’s administration.
“Conroe ISD is one of the best districts in the state and has some of the best teachers, but for some reason the administration allows a very small, outspoken group of crazies to tarnish the identity of the school,” said Toth.
The controversial statement comes just days after the district has been embroiled in scandal for a video showing a bus monitor beating a special needs student. That employee has since been fired.
