Gov. Greg Abbott has endorsed Republican candidate Brent Money for the open House District 2 seat.
“I can count on Brent to fight for a secure border, cut property taxes, and empower parents to choose the best education for their child,” said Abbott on Tuesday.
Encompassing Hunt, Van Zandt, and Hopkins counties, the seat was vacated in May after State Rep. Bryan Slaton, a Republican from Royse City, was expelled from the House.
The open seat saw five Republicans and one Democrat vying for the position.
Money, a local attorney, took the top spot in the first round of voting, with Republican businesswoman Jill Dutton coming in second place.
Since neither candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, a runoff election was scheduled for January.
Dutton has become the chosen candidate by House leadership, receiving support from sources like Texans for Lawsuit Reform.
Money, meanwhile, has been much more vocal against House leadership, calling for House Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont) to resign following the failed impeachment of Attorney General Ken Paxton. Paxton has also endorsed Money for the HD 2 seat.
The special election for House District 2 is on January 30.
