Jill Dutton won a narrow victory over Brent Money in the special election runoff election for House District 2.
The campaign is not over yet, however.
Encompassing Hunt, Van Zandt, and Hopkins counties, the seat was vacated in May after State Rep. Bryan Slaton (R-Royse City) was expelled from the House.
The open seat saw five Republicans and one Democrat vying for the position.
Money, a local attorney, took the top spot in the first round of voting in November, with Republican businesswoman Jill Dutton coming in second place.
Since neither candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, a runoff election was scheduled.
Money quickly racked up endorsements from statewide officials, including Sen. Ted Cruz, Gov. Greg Abbott, and Attorney General Ken Paxton. Dutton, meanwhile, heavily relied on the financial backing of Texans for Lawsuit Reform.
Dutton won the special election runoff—which included Republican and Democrat voters—by a margin of 107 votes.
Though she will be sworn in as the state representative, the state legislature is not in session and likely will not return until next January. Both candidates will be on the Republican primary ballot on March 5.
Money has told supporters he plans to compete in the March election, which will likely determine who represents the district in the 2025 legislative session.
