Less than a week.
That’s the amount of time Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Texas House Speaker Dennis Bonnen, and 180 other lawmakers have to make good on the promises they made on the campaign trail.
You’ll be the judge of whether they did so or not—a task we aim to help with through the Fiscal Responsibility Index, which should arrive in mid-June.
Each of these lawmakers promised to cut property taxes, eliminate Robin Hood, and protect the lives, liberties, and wallets of everyday Texans. But, so far, keeping those promises has proven difficult for them.
As one would imagine, with a session that is so far shy on real results, the vast majority of lawmakers aren’t faring too well on the Fiscal Responsibility Index. And with almost 200 votes selected for the Index already, it’s not looking like very many of them will earn a rating worth putting on the refrigerator.
Most conservative priorities are dead already, but legislators still have time to get some of the bigger things right.
They could still adopt a Conservative Texas Budget that grows government by population and inflation or less.
They could still pass strong and substantial property tax reform.
Lawmakers could still pass major property tax relief that ensures taxpayers’ tax bills go down, not up.
But they’ve got less than a week to do it.
