School choice advocate Corey DeAngelis announced on social media that his organization’s political action committee will be opposing anti-school choice representatives in the Texas House.

DeAngelis listed a number of candidates, saying that American Federation for Children Victory Fund is “targeting these 12 ‘Republicans’ in the Texas House for opposing school choice.” All 12 are facing one or more challengers in the March Primary Election.

  • Gary VanDeaver (R-New Boston) who represents House District 1, northeast of Dallas.
  • Travis Clardy (R-Nacogdoches) who represents House District 11, southeast of Fort Worth.

School choice has recently been a topic of controversy in Texas, as the Senate has passed school choice repeatedly, while the House has failed to pass the measure.

The issue is one of the top priorities for the Republican Party of Texas, and Gov. Greg Abbott made the issue his priority for the 2023 legislative session.

“Empowering parents means giving them the choice to send their children to any public school, charter school, or private school with state funding following the student,” Abbott said.

The primary election is March 5.
