President Joe Biden has announced he will not be seeking re-election, just weeks ahead of the Democrat Party’s convention, and has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement.

Biden made the announcement on Sunday afternoon in a social media post, where he said, “I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my
term.”

The announcement comes after weeks of building calls to step down following a disastrous debate performance earlier this month.

The first Democrat member of Congress to call on the president to step aside was U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, from Austin. Since then, dozens had joined the calls over the past few weeks.

However, Biden stopped short of resigning the office. He will address the nation in a speech later this week.

In a response on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump said “Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve – And never was!”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Biden’s endorsement of Harris means he may need to “triple the border wall, razor wire barriers and National Guard on the border.”

The Democrat National Convention is slated to take place August 19-22 in Chicago.

This is a developing story.
