Moderates will gather next week in San Antonio to support the campaign of a Republican Texas congressman most known for his attacks on President Trump. The guest of honor will be disgraced House Speaker Joe Straus, who was recently censured by both the Bexar County and state-level Republican governing bodies.
US Rep. Will Hurd (R-San Antonio) refused to endorse Trump in 2016, then in the lead up to the general election called on Trump to drop out of the race. Last year, Hurd made headlines for a”bipartisan cross-country road trip” with US Rep. Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke (D-El Paso). O’Rourke was known at the time to be considering, and has since announced, a general election campaign against US Sen. Ted Cruz.
The February 20 fundraiser will be at the home of Anapaula & Mark Watson, III. Watson, CEO of the Argo Group insurance underwriter, has been a large contributor to Straus and the Associated Republicans of Texas. ART is a liberal interest group that works politically to thwart conservative lawmakers in the Texas Legislature.
Hurd is the lowest-rated Republican in Texas’ congressional delegation on the Heritage Action rating of Congress.
In neither of his two elections has Hurd garnered more than 49 percent of the vote in what is generally considered to be Texas’ only true swing district. In Texas, the general election goes to the candidate who receives the most votes, even if under 50 percent.
