A middle school band director in the Abilene Independent School District has been busted for possessing child sexual abuse material.
Lance Carl Mosley was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography, a third-degree felony punishable by 2 to 10 years in prison.
Mosley was booked into the Taylor County Jail on January 8. Bond is set at $250,000.
Court records show the offense date as July 5, 2025. He was allegedly identified through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Mosley was the Director of Bands at Mann STEAM Academy, which serves 6th-8th grade students. More than 200 students participate in the school’s band program.
Mosley has already been scrubbed from the school’s website.
Mann Principal Chad Drake notified parents of Mosley’s arrest through a Friday morning message in the school’s Remind app.
Abilene ISD is aware of the arrest of Lance Mosley on Thursday, January 8. As soon as the district received notice of his arrest from law enforcement, we acted immediately to remove Mr. Mosley’s access to our students and ensure that he was never on campus today.
The district is in the process of notifying the State Board for Educator Certification as required by law. While state law limits the amount and nature of information we can share at this time, we want to assure our community that we are cooperating fully with law enforcement to keep our students safe as they investigate this matter.
Online records show Mosley has worked for Abilene ISD since 2020. He previously taught in San Angelo ISD.
He has held a Texas teaching certificate for music since 2013, which was renewed in February 2025.
Mosley is among hundreds of Texas teachers across the state accused of sex crimes—including possessing, producing, and distributing CSAM—involving students and other children.
In 2025, former Abilene ISD counselor Robert Custer was arrested on a federal charge of accessing child pornography.
Another Abilene ISD music teacher, Lawrence Grigg, was arrested in 2024 for having sex with a student while teaching at Cooper High School.
