An award-winning wrestling coach in Amarillo Independent School District is accused of sex crimes involving a student.

Nicholas Jade Herrmann, 31, was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of improper relationship between educator and student—a second-degree felony punishable by 2 to 20 years in prison.

Herrmann was an assistant boys wrestling coach at Tascosa High School.

According to a statement from Amarillo ISD officials, Herrmann was allowed to resign when the allegations surfaced.

AISD has no tolerance for this type of alleged behavior. Upon learning of the allegation, the District quickly removed the individual from campus, law enforcement was notified, and the employee resigned. The District also made reports to Child Protective Services and the State Board of Educator Certification (SBEC). AISD will continue to cooperate fully with authorities. Any further information will need to come from the Amarillo Police Department.

State records show Herrmann is certified as a special education teacher. His certification is currently under review by the Texas Education Agency.

ABC 7 News reported Monday that the alleged sexual encounters between the coach and student took place in Herrmann’s home.

As a Tascosa High School student from 2009 to 2012, Herrmann was a state champion wrestler.

Last year, Herrmann was named 5A Assistant Coach of the Year by the Texas High School Wrestling Coaches Association.

He also coached wrestling at Lone Star Academy in Amarillo. In a statement on social media, LSA said Herrmann was no longer welcome at the training facility “now or in the future.”
