Heated arguments ensued at a city council meeting after an annual financial audit revealed a $6 million deficit in the City of Elgin’s account.

On October 21, City Councilmember Tiffany St. Pierre accused Democrat Mayor Theresa McShan of not wanting a forensic audit to examine the mismanagement of funds during the 2023 and 2024 fiscal years.

McShan was elected in May of 2023 as mayor of the small town in Bastrop County.

“We’re not going to go back and try to figure out what all did happen,” said McShan.

“We have a right as constituents and a right as residents to know where our money was spent and how it was spent,” St. Pierre shot back.

The argument between the councilwoman and the mayor quickly escalated, with both interrupting one another and raising their voices.

As the mayor attempted to change the subject, Councilmember Arthur Gibson III interjected a question about the process of a forensic audit, momentarily pausing the escalation.

A few minutes later, St. Pierre accused the mayor of not putting discussion of the forensic audit on the agenda as they discussed prior to the meeting due to the mayor’s personal desire to avoid it.

More heated exchanges followed, only stopped by other members of the city council suggesting a work session be held at a later date to discuss a forensic audit.

The next meeting is set to be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5 in the Elgin Public Library and will be streamed on the city’s YouTube channel. It will begin with public comments then move on to discussion about the possibility of a forensic audit.
