UPDATED March 15.

Police have arrested a South Belton Middle School teacher accused of sexually assaulting a student in 2021.

Logan Michael Demeny, 29, was arrested Monday and charged with sexual assault of a child, a second-degree felony.

Demeny has been on leave from Belton Independent School District while police investigated the allegations, which arose last month.

The victim told the Belton Police Department that the assaults occurred while she was a student in Demeny’s eighth grade English class but not on school grounds.

The girl reportedly told investigators she was in a romantic and sexual relationship with the teacher for more than a year, when she was 13 or 14 years old, and they engaged in sexual intercourse more than 10 times, at least once at his apartment.

Demeny was booked into the Bell County Jail and is being held on a $200,000 bond.

Superintendent Malinda Golden issued a statement in February that a staff member had been placed on administrative leave due to alleged misconduct but did not identify the employee.

On Monday, Golden emailed an update to district families:

Today, I want to update you that criminal charges have been filed against Logan Demeny for an incident that occurred in 2021, and his employment with Belton ISD is being terminated.

We will continue to fully cooperate with the Belton Police Department and prosecutors throughout the legal process.

Reports regarding these charges have also been submitted to the Texas Education Agency, State Board of Educator Certification, and Child Protective Services. Our priority remains supporting those directly impacted.

State records show Demeny received a teaching certificate in 2020.

“I am committed to being honest with you about this process and the actions we have taken,” Golden’s statement concluded. “Belton ISD will not tolerate any behavior that puts our students at risk. We will take strong and decisive action to hold those who cause harm accountable.”

Another Belton ISD employee—a Tarver Elementary teacher—was also placed on administrative leave last month following allegations of misconduct that were reported to the Temple Police Department.

In just the past few years, hundreds of Texas teachers have been accused of sex crimes involving students and other children.
