Brent Money, a local attorney, has unseated businesswoman Jill Dutton only two months after narrowly losing the runoff election for House District 2 to her.

Money took first place in the November election before losing by 121 votes in the runoff election in January.

Encompassing Hunt, Van Zandt, and Hopkins counties, the seat was vacated last May after State Rep. Bryan Slaton (R-Royse City) was expelled from the House.

Money had endorsements from former President Donald Trump as well as statewide officials, including Sen. Ted Cruz, Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and Attorney General Ken Paxton. Dutton, meanwhile, heavily relied on the financial backing of Texans for Lawsuit Reform.

Money released a statement following his win:

Tonight’s victory goes to the conservative people in this district who are desperate for a conservative fighter in Austin. For months, the Austin establishment poured millions of dollars into this district to preserve the status quo, but the voters of HD02 sent their message loud and clear: we will not be bought.

Money will face Democrat Kristen Washington in the November General Election.
