Following questions about a middle school club, New Braunfels Independent School District confirmed that the “Alphabet Soup” club was “paused” while all district clubs undergo an “extensive review process to ensure compliance” with Senate Bill 12.

SB 12, known as the Parental Bill of Rights, protects children from sexual ideologies and DEI instruction in public schools. It took effect on September 1.

One provision of the law states that “a school district may not authorize or sponsor a student club based on sexual orientation or gender identity.”

A concerned resident reached out to Texas Scorecard over concerns that the “Alphabet Soup” club was in violation of the new law, as it appeared to be an LGBT-focused group.

According to the advertisement on the Oak Run Middle School website (now removed), the “kindness” club is “inclusive” of “ALL” students. Rainbows decorated the flyer.

The club was being overseen by Oak Run Middle School librarian Amanda Hunt. Hunt’s X profile includes her preferred pronouns (she/her), and her resume cites her creation of “necessary & inclusive programs” such as “LGBTQ+ clubs.”

Texas Scorecard reached out to New Braunfels ISD and was informed the website was from last year and “is no longer being updated.”

A district spokesperson wrote, “All clubs in NBISD are currently undergoing an extensive review process to ensure compliance with the parental rights requirements outlined in Senate Bill 12 (SB12). The specific club you referenced is paused at this time while that review is completed.”

Bonnie Wallace, a conservative activist who has traveled across Texas to speak against explicit and inappropriate content in schools, encouraged concerned citizens to speak out.

“Parents and community members must speak out when they discover things that violate Texas law, like this Alphabet Club,” said Wallace. “Many schools will continue allowing this extremely harmful content unless they are called out.”
