Parents of Coppell Independent School District elementary school students have complained that boys are being allowed in girls’ bathrooms – and the school district isn’t going to do anything about it.
According to two Texas Scorecard sources, parents lodged complaints with Coppell ISD about kindergarten boys using girls’ bathrooms. They claim a boy of similar age – and dressed like a girl – exposed himself to their young daughters in the girls restroom. But after a meeting allegedly with the CISD Superintendent Dr. Mike Waldrip, the parents were told the incident doesn’t conflict with district policy. It intends to comply with the Obama administration’s directive which says “gender identity” is a protected class under Title IX of the Civil Rights Act.
The directive – which has no legal force – said that schools must give “transgender” students access to whichever single-sex facilities and activities correspond to their chosen “gender identity, or face lawsuits and/or loss of federal funds. Public backlash from critics centers on the argument that enforcing this policy would effectively require schools to provide access to whichever facilities students choose, regardless of gender.
That policy enacted by executive fiat was issued in the form of a “Dear Colleague” letter on “transgender students,” sent by the federal Justice and Education Departments to school districts nationwide in May 2016.
The Trump administration, however, rescinded that policy with a “Dear Colleague” letter of its own in February of this year.
So what is Coppell ISD’s stated policy on allowing students of either sex to use sex-segregated private facilities like restrooms, locker rooms, and showers? Texas Scorecard is reaching out to the district to find out.
