An elementary school nurse in the Rio Grande Valley has been charged with sexual misconduct involving a student.
Ruben Del Toro, 46, was arrested and charged with two counts of indecency with a child by sexual contact, a second-degree felony punishable by 2 to 20 years in prison.
Del Toro is a district nurse at Monte Alto Elementary, according to the Monte Alto Independent School District website.
An investigation began months ago when the child’s mother reported to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office that a male school nurse had touched the student inappropriately several times during school hours, KRGV reported.
Investigators found probable cause to charge Del Toro and obtained arrest warrants.
Del Toro was booked into the Hidalgo County Jail on September 30 and released the same day on bonds totaling $100,000, $50,000 for each charge.
Monte Alto ISD stated that Del Toro was suspended as soon as the district learned about the allegations and said school officials are working with authorities during the ongoing investigation.
“The safety and well-being of our students remain the district’s highest priority,” added Monte Alto ISD.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office at 956-383-8114.
Del Toro has held a license as a registered nurse since 2018.
Over the past few years, hundreds of Texas school employees have been accused of sex crimes involving students and other children, and thousands have been reported to the Texas Education Agency for sexual misconduct.
TEA data shows the agency is currently investigating more than 3,000 educator sexual misconduct complaints and opening an average of 250 new cases each month. Overall misconduct reports tripled in 2026 compared to 2025.
