Another Texas teacher has been charged with possessing and distributing child pornography after he was caught downloading and sharing child porn via online chat groups.

Authorities arrested Daniel Byrd, 29, a teacher in the Navasota Independent School District northwest of Houston, on March 23.

According to federal prosecutors, Byrd used Kik and Telegram messaging apps to view and download pornographic images of children, and shared the images in online chat groups.

He allegedly joined groups dedicated to sharing child pornography and would download content to his MEGA account. Byrd then posted links from his MEGA account into Kik groups, thereby allowing others to access folders containing child pornography, according to the charges.

Byrd taught science at Navasota High School.

A press release issued by Navasota ISD Superintendent Stu Musick said Byrd was “immediately placed on administrative leave pending further investigation by law enforcement” and the district had “no reason to believe that any students or other staff members” were involved.

If convicted, Byrd faces up to 20 years in prison for distribution and another 10 years for possession of child pornography.

In Belton ISD, where now-former athletic trainer Trevor Swift is awaiting trial for watching child porn on campus in view of students, parents recently discovered that South Belton Middle School orchestra director Lydia Christensen was imprisoned in 2020 after being convicted of possessing and distributing child pornography showing children under the age of 12 engaged in sex acts.

In February, two Texas teachers were caught in an online sexual exploitation sweep in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and charged with possession of child porn.

Also in February, a West Texas teacher in Valentine ISD was sentenced to 20 years in prison for distributing child porn.
