A former Navasota Independent School District teacher was sentenced to five years in federal prison after he admitted to possessing child pornography showing adult males sexually assaulting young boys.
Daniel Jonathan Byrd, 31, was a science teacher at Navasota High School when he was arrested in March 2023 for possessing and distributing child porn. His wife taught at an elementary school in College Station.
Authorities caught Byrd downloading and sharing child sexual abuse material—commonly called child pornography—using Kik and Telegram messaging apps, online chat groups, and online storage site MEGA.
According to the criminal complaint, some images and videos depicted sexual contact between prepubescent males, while others showed adult males sexually assaulting boys who appeared to be 8 to 10 years old. (Warning: The affidavit contains disturbing content.)
Byrd pleaded guilty in November 2024 to possessing and receiving CSAM; a distribution charge was dropped as part of a plea deal.
He was sentenced on April 7 to 60 months in federal prison. After completing his prison term, Byrd will serve 10 years of supervised release. During that time, he will have restricted access to children and the internet and will be ordered to register as a sex offender.
State records show Byrd’s teaching certificate is currently under review by the Texas Education Agency.
Byrd is among hundreds of Texas teachers accused of sex crimes involving children in just the past few years—including many charged with possessing, creating, and distributing child sexual abuse material.
