A former Edgewood Independent School District teacher pled guilty to having an improper relationship with a female student and was sentenced to 10 years of probation.
Miguel Nava Jr. was charged in January 2024 with distribution of harmful material to a minor and improper relationship between educator and student. Nava, then a geometry teacher at Kennedy High School, admitted to sending nude photos of himself to a female student and kissing the girl in his classroom.
An Edgewood ISD spokesperson confirmed Nava was “let go” in January 2024. “Safety and security are Edgewood ISD’s top priorities,” the spokesperson added. “EISD and the EISD Police Department will always act in the best interest of the security and safety of our students, staff and faculty.”
According to court records, Nava was convicted Monday on the improper relationship charge. The distribution of harmful material to a minor charge was dropped earlier this year.
Nava has been ordered to pay nearly $400 in fines and court costs.
Nava is currently listed as “under investigation” in the Texas Education Agency’s Do Not Hire Registry, a list of people ineligible to be employed by a public school. Only those listed as “not eligible” are barred from employment.
Hundreds of Texas school employees have been charged with sex crimes involving students and other children.
