A high school athletic trainer in Garland Independent School District is accused of a sex crime involving a minor.

Shamond Hamilton, 26, was arrested and charged with indecency with a child by sexual contact, a second-degree felony. Hamilton began working as an athletic trainer at North Garland High School this school year.

The alleged crime did not involve a Garland ISD student, according to a letter to NGHS families from Principal John Fishpaw.

“This individual is new to our district and, as with all employees, was hired only after completing all required background checks,” wrote Fishpaw. He said Hamilton was placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues but the district had no additional details.

During the previous school year, Hamilton worked at El Campo High School, located in Wharton County.

Hamilton was booked into the Dallas County Jail on Sunday and is being held for the Wharton County Sheriff’s Office without bond.

State records show Hamilton does not hold a Texas teaching certificate.

Hamilton is among hundreds of Texas educators accused of sex crimes involving students and other children in just the past few years.

Thousands of educator sexual misconduct complaints have been reported to the Texas Education Agency since the agency began keeping organized records in 2021.
