Collin County GOP primary voters said “Hale Yes” to their current commissioner over a last-minute challenger.

Precinct 3 Commissioner Darrell Hale bested former mayor of Allen Steve Terrell in Tuesday’s Republican primary election by a 56-44 percent margin.

Hale received support from all conservative organizations that endorsed in the race, including Texans for Fiscal Responsibility.

At an election night victory party, Hale told Texas Scorecard he was pleased voters chose him this time based on his performance in the office.

“Do what you promised to do, and you actually get re-elected,” he said.

Hale was first elected in 2018 to fill the unexpired term of now-County Judge Chris Hill, who also endorsed Hale. Since then, he has earned a reputation as a taxpayer champion who is transparent and accessible to constituents.

He campaigned on his record of keeping his promises while serving as commissioner.

“I have actually done everything I said I would do—hold to the effective tax rate, communicate effectively, and represent you down in Austin on bills that matter to you,” Hale said at a candidate forum last month. “I have fulfilled my campaign promises to you before, and I intend to again.”

Hale’s opponent was an unexpected last-day entrant in the race who ran on his 23 years as mayor of Allen. A term limits ordinance passed by voters last year meant Terrell could not run again after his last term would have expired in May. Another city ordinance mandated Terrell automatically resign as mayor when he filed to run for county commissioner.

Hale will face Democrat Dianne Mayo in the November 3 general election.
