After one Mckinney Independent School District trustee motioned to protect girls’ sports in the district, the other board members shut it down before a discussion could occur.
During Monday’s school board meeting, Trustee Chad Green motioned for the board to vote on supporting young girls by not allowing biological boys to compete on girls’ sports teams or enter their locker rooms.
While some parents said it should have been a unanimous decision to support the issue, none of the six other board members seconded the motion, resulting in the proposal dying before even discussion could occur. Board rules requiring notice wouldn’t have allowed for a vote to be taken Monday, but discussion was not prohibited and Board President Philip Hassler did not rule the motion outside of the bounds of the meeting.
Before Green’s motion, Mckinney resident Lee Breckenridge-Moore spoke during public comments, encouraging the board members to protect young girls’ spaces.
“You can still be bold while the courts are figuring this out … show the girls of MISD that you put their safety over money,” said Breckenridge-Moore.
After the meeting, multiple people took to Facebook to express their disapproval of the board’s decision.
“Completely disturbing and sad that only one person stood up for young women and that is Mr. Chad Green. The rest of the school board member[s] should not be reelected and they should be shamed out of office because this is completely unacceptable and pathetic,” wrote Mike McCandless.
Another resident suggested that citizens should recall the board members.
“That is absolutely disgusting. I can’t believe only one board member is interested in protecting girls. Parents should be outraged! Maybe a recall election is in order,” wrote Vanessa Adame.
One of two conservative Round Rock ISD trustees, Danielle Weston, stated, “There was a time when fathers would rise up to protect their daughters. Not anymore.”
Of the seven board members, four of their terms expire in May 2025, including Board President Philip Hassler and Trustees Francisco Javier “Harvey” Oaxaca, Larry Jagours, and Chad Green.
Trustees Amy Dankel, Stephanie O’Dell, and Lynn Sperry were re-elected last year. Sperry, wife of famed Texas gardening expert Neil Sperry, has served on the school board for 40 years.
The Texas Ethics Commission fined McKinney Mayor George Fuller for publicly endorsing the three incumbents during an official government meeting, violating state electioneering laws.
