Parker County GOP passed a resolution calling for representatives to unite and publicly commit to the Republican Caucus’ nominee for speaker.

On Tuesday, the local GOP passed the resolution urging House Republicans to unite behind Republican Caucus nominee State Rep. David Cook (R-Mansfield) for speaker of the Texas House, as the other choice, State Rep. Dustin Burrows (R-Lubbock), seems to be the House Democrats’ choice.

“Representative Dustin Burrows has offered extensive concessions to the Texas House Democratic Caucus to obtain approval for its members to vote for a Republican Speaker candidate other than Representative Cook, to stop Republican agenda items such as school choice, ending taxpayer-funded lobbying, and ending the practice of appointing Democratic committee chairs,” reads the resolution.

In addition to calling for unity, Parker County GOP is calling on Burrows and any other Republican representative running against Cook to “immediately suspend any campaign activities for Speaker of the House and to commit to support Representative Cook.”

PCGOP also stated that if there is any attempt to change the rules of the Texas House to allow a secret ballot vote for the speaker, it will be interpreted as an “attempt to hide a vote with Democrats” and will be considered a censurable act.

Parker County GOP Chairman Brady Gray told Texas Scorecard that people are done with speakers who hinder conservative values and legislation.

“If the last election cycle has taught us anything, it’s that the people are done with uni-party control. They’ve had enough of Democrats holding powerful Chairmanship positions in the Texas House, and they’re tired of the Speaker of the Texas House hindering conservative legislation and punishing Republican members who do not bend the knee,” stated Gray.

“For more than 25 years Republicans have held a majority in both chambers and every statewide elected office, giving elected Republicans the power to lead. No Speaker candidate should have to seek Democrat support to lead the Texas House.”
