A South Texas school superintendent is asking the public to avoid “speculation” and “negative commentary” after announcing on social media that an employee was accused of misconduct involving a student.

Roma Independent School District Superintendent Carlos Gonzalez posted on Facebook Friday that an unnamed staff member had been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

Gonzalez said the district reported the allegations to state and local regulators and law enforcement and is “fully cooperating with the appropriate authorities as a review is being conducted.”

He also asked the public to “avoid speculation” and said “negative comments” on social media unfairly “tarnish the reputation” of other staff members and cast the school in an “unfounded negative light.”

“At this time, no conclusions should be drawn,” wrote Gonzalez.

We respectfully ask our students, families, staff, and community members to avoid speculation or public commentary that could interfere with the investigative process or impact the privacy and well-being of all individuals involved—especially our students and hard-working staff members who have no involvement with the current situation.

“It is highly unfair to tarnish the reputation of the dedicated staff members who show up to work everyday to have a positive impact on our students and their families,” he stated.

Gonzalez also called for the public to delete any “negative commentary” on social media.

“On behalf of the district, we respectfully request that any negative commentary on social media be either deleted or stop as such negative comments cast an unfounded negative light on Veterans Memorial Elementary, which is uncalled for,” stated Gonzalez, suggesting that the allegations are tied to that campus.

“Our priority remains the safety and support of our students, and we are committed to maintaining a learning environment where all members of our school community feel secure and respected,” he added. “As the situation develops, the district will provide further information as we are legally permitted to do so.”

In just the past few years, thousands of school employees have been reported to the Texas Education Agency for physical and sexual misconduct involving students and other children.
