Ronny Jackson is one step closer to heading to Washington to represent Texas’ 13th Congressional District in the U.S. House.
On Tuesday night, Jackson, a retired Navy rear admiral and former White House physician, trounced former lobbyist Josh Winegarner—56 to 44 percent, according to unofficial results. Jackson carried the top three counties in the district—Potter, Randall, and Wichita—overcoming what seemed to be a firewall for Winegarner in the Amarillo area during the March 3 primary.
In an interview with Texas Scorecard, Jackson said he is excited about the victory and is now ready to help other Republican candidates running in competitive races across Texas.
“I feel enthusiastic, energized, and ready to fight the good fight,” Jackson said.
Jackson advanced to the runoff on March 3, with Winegarner falling about 10 points short of winning a majority. During his runoff campaign, momentum was building for Jackson, with support from President Donald Trump and his family playing a major role in the campaign. Meanwhile, Winegarner was endorsed by the outgoing incumbent, U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Clarendon), and establishment PACs such as Amarillo Matters. Winegarner also earned the support of U.S. Rep. Will Hurd (R-Helotes), a critic of President Trump, which became a hot topic on the campaign trail.
With the runoff out of the way, Jackson is now headed to the November general election against Democrat Gus Trujillo and Libertarian Jack Westbrook. Jackson is considered to be a heavy favorite for the general election.
