The San Antonio City Council finalized six charter amendments during a meeting last week for voters to decide during the Nov. 5 election.

Community Impact reported that proposed changes A through F to the city’s charter came from findings of a Charter Review Commission established in November.

Specifically, Proposition A would retain term limits for Ethics Review Board members.

Proposition B would address outdated charter language and provisions.

Proposition C would allow the City Council to set the terms for the city manager’s employment and compensation.

According to the news outlet, District 9 Council Member John Courage said of Proposition C, “I think when this commission decided to recommend that the council retain its ultimate authority to hire or fire or pay the CEO for the city, that that was a good move for us,”

In addition, Proposition D aims to protect city employees who participate in local political activity from political retribution.

Guillermo Vazquez, field director for the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, referred to Proposition D as “a big deal considering this will allow employees to fully participate in the political process.”

“After all, having a voice is something all of us desire,” he added.

Proposition E seeks to set annual compensation for council members and the mayor with adjustments based on U.S. Housing and Urban Development reports.

Lastly, Proposition F would allow term increases for elected City Council members and the mayor from two to four years while reducing term limits from four to two full terms.

Community Impact also reported that while propositions A through F passed, the Council voted unanimously in favor of propositions A through D.
