Rather than mount a statewide bid for attorney general of Texas, State Rep. Matt Krause (R–Haslet) is reportedly considering a run for Tarrant County criminal district attorney. Several sources in Tarrant County and the Texas Legislature tell Texas Scorecard an announcement from Krause could be made within the next several days.
Krause had announced his run against incumbent Attorney General Ken Paxton in mid-September, when it was already a crowded field. Not only is Paxton seeking re-election, but he also is facing GOP challenges from Land Commissioner George P. Bush and former Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman, and U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert.
Tarrant County District Attorney Sharen Wilson announced earlier this month she will not be seeking re-election in 2022.
Krause’s pathway to attorney general was uncertain, but getting the Tarrant County job won’t be a cakewalk. Already running for the job is Republican Phil Sorrells, who currently serves as a district judge in Tarrant County. Sorrells has been endorsed by former Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
The Republican primary is currently slated to be held on March 1, 2022.
