A South Texas teacher has been arrested and charged with possession of child pornography, according to the school district’s superintendent.

David Scott Hunter, 52, is a fourth-grade teacher at Freer Independent School District, which is located between Laredo and Corpus Christi.

Hunter was charged with possession of child pornography, featuring a child younger than 10 years old—a third degree felony with a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Hunter was booked into the Duval County jail with a bond set at $150,000.

In a statement from Freer ISD Superintendent Conrad Cantu, the district was able to confirm that the alleged crime took place off campus.

“Freer Independent School District (“District”) has received information that a teacher has been arrested for possession of child pornography,” wrote Cantu. “The District has been able to confirm that the allegations stem from alleged actions that took place away from school.”

Cantu added that the district will be reporting Hunter’s arrest to the State Board of Educator Certification and counseling has been made available to students who need it.

Cantu told Texas Scorecard that Hunter is currently on administrative leave and “the district is seeking to terminate employment.”

Each year, dozens of Texas teachers and school employees are charged with sex crimes involving students and other children.
