Two Texas teachers prosecuted in separate cases for sexually abusing students have been sentenced to state prison.
Former Lewisville Independent School District teacher John Collett was sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old female student.
According to The Colony Police Department, Collett pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault of a child, improper relationship between educator and student, and two counts of indecency with a child by sexual contact.
Collett taught at Camey Elementary. He was a Teacher of the Year in 2020 and was nominated for Best Teacher in Denton County in 2022.
Less than a year later, in April 2023, he was arrested and charged with molesting the girl on two occasions inside a classroom after school.
He was sentenced on March 28. After prison, Collett will be required to register as a sex offender for life.
State records show Collett’s teaching certificate is under review by the Texas Education Agency.
In a separate case, former Nacogdoches ISD teacher Annaleigh Andrews received just two years in state prison for sexually assaulting a student multiple times.
Andrews, who taught at McMichael Middle School, began grooming the student in the summer of 2023, sending Snapchat messages and using marijuana with her victim.
She was arrested in July 2023 and charged with a dozen felonies.
In August 2024, she pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual assault of a child and three counts of online solicitation of a minor.
Judge Malcolm Bales reportedly wanted to sentence Andrews to probation only, but state law required a minimum of two years of prison time. After prison, Andrews will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.
Nacogdoches County Assistant District Attorney Amy Wren said the state asked for 10 years.
According to the DA’s office, the judge’s light sentence does not reflect “the seriousness of the crime committed, the position of trust the defendant occupied during the commission of these offenses, or the harm suffered by the victim and the victim’s family.”
State records show Andrews’ teaching certificate, which expired in 2023, is under review by the TEA.
Another former Texas teacher was sentenced Monday to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to child pornography charges. Daniel Byrd was a teacher in Navasota ISD when he was arrested in 2023 for sharing child sexual abuse material showing young boys being assaulted.
The three recently sentenced teachers are among hundreds of Texas school employees accused of sex crimes involving students and other children that Texas Scorecard has covered in just the past few years.
