Keller taxpayers appear to have carried the day Saturday as they went to the polls to decide who will be sitting in the two obtainable city council seats this election cycle.
Newcomer Sheri Almond defeated her two opponents in the Place 3 election, carrying the seat with 51 percent of the vote.
Another newcomer, Beckie Paquin, endorsed by former Keller Councilman Armin Mizani, defeated Place 4 incumbent Eric Schmidt 54-45 percent.
Both Paquin and Almond ran on a platform of addressing skyrocketing property taxes. Paquin told Texas Scorecard she wants to flatten taxes, and if tax hikes go above 2.5 percent, voters should have a say through an election trigger as Gov. Abbott proposed in his property tax reform plan.
When Paquin’s opponent, Schmidt, was asked if he supported Abbott’s plan, he said, “God forbid.”
“Last night’s election in Keller proves that our residents seek leaders with a pragmatic and clear vision for Keller’s future,” Mizani told Texas Scorecard. “Both Beckie Paquin and Sheri Almond have pledged to fight on behalf of all Keller taxpayers and to preserve Keller’s character.”
“I couldn’t be more excited for what Keller’s future has in store with both these leaders on the dais,” Mizani said.
