Former lawmaker Alan Schoolcraft has unseated incumbent State Rep. John Kuempel of Seguin for the Republican nomination.

House District 44 encompasses Guadalupe and Gonzales Counties.

Schoolcraft earned the endorsement of Gov. Greg Abbott for his support of school choice. Kuempel came under fire for his vote against school choice.

Kuempel was primarily funded by establishment forces and the gambling lobby. Schoolcraft, however, was backed by many grassroots organizations, the governor, and various statewide officials.

Schoolcraft won with around 55 percent of the vote as of publishing.

He will face Democrat Eric Norman in the November general election.
