Attorney General Ken Paxton has sued a New York doctor for giving abortion pills to Texas residents despite not being a licensed Texas physician.

Dr. Margaret Carpenter is a medical professional in New York who allegedly provided an abortion pill to a resident of Collin County.

According to Paxton, the pill killed the unborn infant and resulted in “serious medical complications” for the mother—who needed medical attention after the pill was administered.

“In this case, an out-of-state doctor violated the law and caused serious harm to this patient,” said Paxton.

“This doctor prescribed abortion-inducing drugs—unauthorized, over telemedicine—causing her patient to end up in the hospital with serious complications,” he continued. “In Texas, we treasure the health and lives of mothers and babies, and this is why out-of-state doctors may not illegally and dangerously prescribe abortion-inducing drugs to Texas residents.”

The attorney general explained current state law prohibits doctors from mailing abortion drugs. Further, no medical professional is allowed to treat Texans or prescribe drugs via telehealth without a Texas medical license.

Paxton’s lawsuit seeks to enjoin Dr. Carpenter from mailing abortion drugs to Texans and impose civil penalties of no less than $100,000 for each violation of state law.
