Already the longest-serving member of the Texas House in state history, Tom Craddick (R-Midland) has filed for re-election to the seat he has held since before the Apollo moon landing.
If the voters in the West Texas district go along with it, Craddick will start his 30th term in the state legislature in January 2027.
“Representing House District 82 is one of the greatest honors of my life,” said Craddick. “The challenges and opportunities facing the Permian Basin will shape generations to come, and I look forward to continuing to fight for our values and future.”
When Craddick was first elected to the Texas House in 1968, the state was tightly held in Democrat hands. Even as Republicans made strides in Texas, first in federal elections and then in the state senate, the House did not shift to the GOP until 2003. Craddick was elected the first Republican speaker since Reconstruction, a post he held until a dozen Republicans joined forces with Democrats to kick him from the post in 2009.
His district includes Midland, Martin, and Dawson counties.
