Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Speaker of the House Dustin Burrows have announced the creation of a new select committee in each chamber that will examine items on the governor’s call list related to the flash floods that occurred in the Hill Country.
The Disaster Preparedness and Flooding Select Committees will be tasked with addressing the Hill Country’s current needs and determining any necessary actions to help avoid such catastrophic impacts in the future.
The agenda includes items such as flood warning systems and emergency communications, relief funding for the Hill Country, and natural disaster preparation and recovery.
Patrick explained that this action is just the beginning of looking into details concerning the tragic flooding that occurred in the Hill Country last weekend.
“In the coming year, and into the next regular legislative session, we will gather all the facts and answer the many questions to which the public demands answers,” stated Patrick.
Burrows expressed gratitude to Patrick for working closely with the House to make certain these call items receive the attention needed.
“With only 30 days to act, we must make every moment count. This effort is about moving quickly to help Texans recover and laying the foundation to better protect our communities—and our children—from future disasters,” Burrows stated.
“Our hearts are with the families across Texas who lost loved ones or saw their homes and livelihoods swept away in the recent, catastrophic floods. In the face of such devastation, Texans deserve swift, united action,” he continued.
The committees will hold their first joint meeting on July 23.
A hearing will also be held in Kerrville for local residents, but the date has not yet been announced.
The special session begins July 21 and can last up to 30 days.
