Last week, Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against Dr. M. Brett Cooper for illegally prescribing cross-sex hormones to children and altering patient records to avoid detection.

Dr. Mary Talley Bowden, a specialist from Houston and a key figure in the movement for medical freedom, posted a thread on X exposing the close relationship between Dr. Cooper and the Texas Medical Association, which unabashedly promotes gender mutilating surgeries, cross-sex hormones, and puberty blockers for children.

In her posts, Dr. Bowden stated that Dr. Cooper, who specializes in adolescent and young adult medicine, has led the charge for TMA’s activism efforts. Part of that activism involved submitting testimony against Senate Bill 14.

“Cooper is one of many radical gender activists heavily involved in the country’s largest medical association, TMA,” she wrote.

“TMA strongly opposed SB14 and joined forces with Lambda Legal, writing an amicus brief on behalf of the plaintiffs in Doe V Abbott, writing ‘TMA supports physician efforts to provide medically appropriate therapies relating to gender identity and opposes efforts to criminalize evidence based, gender-affirming care for transgender youth,’” she continued.

The lawsuit cited by Bowden came after Gov. Greg Abbott sent a letter to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services directing them to conduct investigations of all reported instances of sex change procedures on children within the state.

DFPS’ investigation followed an opinion issued by Paxton declaring that sex change procedures and treatments performed on children can legally count as child abuse under the Texas Family Code.

In a separate Substack post from July, Bowden argued that Texas had become a testing ground for far-left public health policies.

“The largest medical association in the country is being led by extremists who embrace mandates, censorship and gender transitioning of minors,” she wrote. “As evidenced at their last meeting, the majority of delegates within the TMA also embrace these tenets.”

In 2023, Dr. Cooper campaigned for Plano City Council Place 5, but did not win the seat.
