A former Democrat member of the Texas Senate is throwing his support behind a Republican candidate for the seat he once held.

Former State Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. of Brownsville announced his endorsement of Adam Hinojosa in the race against freshman Democrat State Sen. Morgan LaMantia, pointing to their shared pro-life values as a key reason.

“Adam’s pro-life stance aligns with mine, the Roman Catholic Church, Texas Pro-Life Christian churches, pro-life organizations, and, I firmly believe, with most of Senate District 27’s constituents,” said Lucio.

“As a steadfast advocate for the sanctity of life, I was re-elected by the district’s voters over a span of 36 years as a state legislator. Now, it’s time to send another strong voice for life back to Austin, and Adam Hinojosa is that voice.”

Lucio also thanked LaMantia for her service in his statement.

“As you know, I’ve always prioritized your interests over partisan divides. This year is no different,” Lucio said. “While I thank her for her service and pray for God’s peace and protection on Senator LaMantia and her family, I strongly believe Adam Hinojosa is the best choice to secure a brighter future for all RGV families. May God bless us all!”

Hinojosa expressed gratitude for Lucio’s endorsement, describing him as a “larger-than-life character in the RGV and South Texas.”

He stood strong for life against the Democrat Party’s culture of death while serving in the Texas Senate. When Morgan LaMantia won two years ago, the pro-life community lost a crucial vote. Senator Lucio is a man of faith, a man of principle, and a man of courage. I am proud to call him my friend!

This race marks a rematch between LaMantia and Hinojosa, who narrowly lost the 2022 election by just 0.19 percent of the vote.

Interestingly, in 2022, LaMantia’s top donor was Texans for Lawsuit Reform. In this cycle, however, the organization is backing Hinojosa.

LaMantia did not respond to a request for comment.
