Gov. Greg Abbott has expanded the agenda for Texas’ second special legislative session, directing lawmakers to tackle new priorities: strengthening public safety and bolstering election integrity.
Abbott announced the expansion Monday afternoon, directing lawmakers to consider a ban on same-day voter registration statewide. The proposed measure aims to enhance election security and prevent potential fraud by requiring voters to register in advance.
In addition, Abbott called for legislation to strengthen law enforcement services across Texas by authorizing counties and cities to contract directly with sheriffs and constables for policing.
The governor’s message notes that these agenda items reflect both constituent concerns and ongoing statewide debates about election reforms and public safety improvements.
“We are committed to making Texas safer and ensuring our elections remain secure,” Abbott said.
Now that lawmakers have passed congressional redistricting legislation, House and Senate members are moving onto issues such as property taxes, flood relief, and empowering the attorney general to prosecute election crimes.
The second special session began on August 15 and can continue for 30 days as lawmakers tackle property taxes, disaster relief, banning taxpayer-funded lobbying, and other items.
