Gov. Greg Abbott has issued a directive to state agency heads, instructing them to adhere to state and federal law including President Donald Trump’s recent executive order, in rejecting what he terms “radical sexual orientation and gender identity ideologies.”
In his letter, Abbott writes, “The State of Texas recognizes only two sexes—male and female—and sex discrimination consists in treating a member of one sex less favorably than the other, absent some pertinent difference.”
According to Abbott, “All Texas agencies must ensure that agency rules, internal policies, employment practices, and other actions comply with the law and the biological reality that there are only two sexes—male and female.”
Abbott’s directive comes in the wake of several actions taken by the Trump administration to reverse policies implemented during the Biden-Harris era.
President Donald Trump issued an executive order last week that aims to defend women from gender ideology extremism and restore biological truth to the federal government. Additional actions from Trump include protecting minors from chemical and surgical gender mutilation and disallowing “transgender” individuals from serving openly in the military.
The latest directive from Abbott reinforces Texas’ alignment with the Trump administration’s stance on adherence to biological reality.
State Rep. Brian Harrison (R-Midlothian) applauded Abbott’s order, stating on X that “After years of exposing how extensively Texas has been promoting leftist gender ideology, I appreciate Governor Abbott directing agencies to recognize the ‘reality that there are only two sexes – male and female.’ I’ll keep exposing any that don’t comply.”
