Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed Austin lawyer Evan Young to the Supreme Court of Texas today to fill the unexpired term of Eva Guzman.

Guzman resigned to challenge Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the GOP primary.

Young is a lawyer for Baker Botts, one of the largest firms in the state and a major contributor to Gov. Abbott’s campaigns. Young will be the third Baker Botts attorney in a row to get an Abbott appointment to the state’s high court.

Young will face conservative jurist David Schenck in the GOP primary. Schenck, who currently serves on the state’s 5th Court of Appeals in the Dallas area, announced his candidacy this morning.
