Helen Kerwin has beaten incumbent State Rep. DeWayne Burns of Cleburne for the House District 58 Republican nomination.

Kerwin, a small business owner, former mayor of Glen Rose, and the first Republican Somervell County commissioner, won by more than 10 percentage points.

Burns had come under fire for his vote against school choice.

Kerwin campaigned in favor of school choice and received the backing of Gov. Greg Abbott, who prioritized education freedom for families in the last legislative session.

She was primarily funded by Abbott while Burns was funded by House Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont) and Texans for Lawsuit Reform.

As there is no Democrat running for House District 58, Kerwin will be elected uncontested in November.
